Auntie Isabelle's Double-Boiler Bread Pudding

 

1 1/2 c. brown sugar
4 slices bread, cut into cubes
3 eggs
2 1/2 c. milk
1 tsp. vanilla
pinch of salt

Put brown sugar in the top of double boiler; top with the cubed bread.  Whisk together the eggs,  milk, vanilla and salt, and pour over the bread and sugar. Do not stir. Cover and cook over hot boiling water 1 hour or until a custard is formed. 

Serve warm with the sauce from the bottom of the pan.
